COP29 outcomes: Baku creates a global agenda for decades

Igor Korotchenko, the General Director of the Caspian Institute for Strategic Studies (Russia) believes that the COP29 meeting in Baku is a confirmation of the high status and weight of Azerbaijan in the international arena.

«COP29 one more time demonstrated to the world that Azerbaijan belongs to the group of states determining the global trends. From the organization standpoint COP29 was impeccable and set a standard for the climate forums. Baku was already famous for brilliant organization of prestigious international summits, but for the time of COP29 it practically became the capital of the world. The conference confirmed that the strong position of Azerbaijan today is recognized absolutely be everyone – both friends and enemies of the Republic», – he said.

«Judging by the comprehensive attempts of discrediting Azerbaijan and the climate summit in Baku made by France and a number of other unfriendly states, as well as by the failure of such attempts, Azerbaijan is capable of teaching a thing or two to France and the Netherlands, who were left out of the international agenda. The geopolitical and geoeconomic importance of Azerbaijan is growing, as well as the importance of the Caspian Region in general. Today Azerbaijan is among the leading countries of the world – this is the fact no one will be able to challenge or to cast away», – Igor Korotchenko emphasized.

Korotchenko indicated, that Azerbaijan was forming the global agenda. «A very sensitive issue raised at COP29 in Baku is climate sponsorship. The countries, that significantly impact the global warming processes do not want to be jointly liable and to assist minor island states, who are the most vulnerable to the climate change. Azerbaijan presented a number of ideas at COP29, which were reviewed, were recognized feasible and correct, and will be implemented. The decisions adopted in Baku during these days will determine the course of the most important global processes in the nearest decades from the standpoint of mitigating the most relevant threats that out civilization is facing», – he explained.

«This demonstrates the level of analytical strategic goal-setting by the leaders of Azerbaijan. If you want to propose global initiatives filled with specific content, you need to study them in detail, to make thorough calculations and to coordinate them with all the stakeholders. Azerbaijan performed a huge analytical preliminary work of which the summit was the ultimate expression. Leading global politicians, heads of international organizations, presidents of major energy companies visited COP29, because Baku had prepared a vast foundation for the constructive dialogue about the future counteraction to the climate change», – Igor Korotchenko continued.

«Also, Azerbaijan used the example of renewal of Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur to demonstrate its strong focus on green technologies, generation based on renewable energy sources including wind generation, hydro-generation and use of solar energy. At COP29 Azerbaijan not only proposed thoroughly developed initiatives, but demonstrated what needed to be done based on its own example», – the General Director of the Caspian Institute for Strategic Studies summarized.
