Armenia received missile weapons from India

25 November 2024

The first lot of MLRS Pinaka arrived to Armenia from India. The supply agreement was executed two years ago. The destruction range of the Indian multiple-launch rocket systems is 75 km.

Igor Korotchenko, a political analyst, the General Director of the Caspian Institute for Strategic Studies (Russia), in his interview to the correspondent of the Vestnik Kavkaza described the threats arising in the South Caucasus in connection with Armenia importing Indian missiles.

«No doubt, this event will have negative implications for the security in the region. Armenia still has not signed the Peace Treaty with Azerbaijan and did not exclude direct claims for the Azerbaijanian territories from its Constitution. In such situation Yerevan is buying offensive weapons such as multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS), thus supporting its revanchist ambitions. Armenia intends to buy air-defence missile systems from India along with short-range attack missiles, which provides for the possibility of striking long-range missile blows», – Igor Korotchenko brought to notice.

«Let me remind here that India is a country with well-developed missile industry. Being a nuclear power, it needed nuclear warheads delivery vehicles of various ranges to counteract Pakistan and China. Indian defence industry has a series of key competencies in the sphere of rocket and missile engineering. Hence, the fact that Armenia intends to procure all types of missile weapons in India will create permanent threats for the stability in the South Caucasus», – the General Director of CISS emphasized.

«France is also supplying military equipment to Armenia. Paris committed to create a «turnkey» integrated air defence systems in the territory of Armenia in the near future based on the cutting-edge developments of the French defence industry in the sphere of anti-air force systems and radar stations. Thus, on one hand, Armenia will get an anti-aircraft shield, and on the other hand, short-range missiles and multiple-launch rocket systems capable of striking long-range blows to assure fire damage», – the political analyst added.

It is no secret for anyone, against whom Armenia can use these Indian rockets. «Armenia views Azerbaijan as its military adversary in the region. Hence, Azerbaijanian diplomats need to conduct the respective negotiations in the way allowing for achieving success not only on the track of delimitation and demarcation of the state frontier, but also on the track of executing the Peace Treaty based on the five key principles formulated by President Ilham Aliyev. It is absolutely inacceptable to accept Armenian proposals supported by Paris and Washington about executing the «interim» Peace Treaty comprising the already agreed clauses. There is no way you could do it, the Peace Treaty needs to be comprehensive and full-fledged», – he emphasized.

«On top of that, political pressure on Armenia is needed to explain that delaying the peace process and rearmament in hopes of military revanche will not assure the results so much expected by Yerevan elites. It is clear that after receiving new modern weapon systems Armenia will turn not to diplomatic, but to military behavior relying on the military forces and support of its current military and technical sponsors. Hence, in its turn, it opens the way for potential conflict in future», – Igor Korotchenko concluded.
