Armenia legitimizes the delimitation of frontiers with Azerbaijan

23 October 2024

Today the National Assembly of Armenia casted the majority of votes in favor of the draft Regulation of Armenian and Azerbaijanian government commissions for delimitation of frontiers.

The bill about ratification of the Regulation of coordinated activities of the government commissions for delimitation of frontiers between Armenia and Azerbaijan was presented for voting. 67 members of the National Assembly voted «For». No one voted «Against» and no one abstained.

Why does Armenia rush into delimitation?

Igor Korotchenko, the General Director of the Caspian Institute for Strategic Studies (Russia) and the political analyst, in his interview to the correspondent of the Caucasus Bulletin expressed his confidence in the overall political situation being the major factor for such facilitated ratification of the Regulation in the Armenian parliament.

«The official Yerevan’s policy is extremely opportunistic and is targeted at receiving the contextual momentary benefits. The first section of the frontier between Armenia and Azerbaijan was successfully delimitated, and the control of the formerly invaded villages of Gazakh District returned to Baku. It looks like the Armenian ruling elites understand that achieving the peace treaty and normalization of the relations with Azerbaijan is not possible without real developments in the sphere of delimitation and demarcation of frontiers. Also, Yerevan will be able to present it as an example of undertaking structural actions», – Igor Korotchenko explained.

«Of course, we welcome any and all the structural steps by Pashinyan’s government. They do not happen often, but in this sphere we are observing absolutely positive progress. Now we should turn to other spheres, as well. As for signing the robust peace treaty, Armenia with the support of the current US administration took up a very uncooperative position. The persistent urge to sign a part of the peace treaty as a comprehensive document and pressing Azerbaijan to do that – in the situation when the Armenian Constitution contains direct reference to the territorial claims with respect to some territories of Azerbaijan – have an extremely negative impact on the current Armenian-Azerbaijanian relations agenda», – he emphasized.

«Delimitation of the frontiers is necessary in any case. The parties need a well-developed internationally accepted frontier excluding cross-border territorial disputes in future, when new Armenian leaders will replace Pashinyan. When it happens in Armenia, and what the circumstances will be – we do not know now, but it is important to approach the situation when the frontiers are accepted by both parties, delimitated and demarcated under the authorities currently in power. In future, Armenia should not be able to revise the achieved solutions», – Korotchenko concluded.
