«Putin and Erdogan understand each other well as they are both defending the national interests of their countries»

26 July 2022

Igor Korotchenko, the General Director of the Caspian Institute for Strategic Studies, in his talk with the Sputnik journalist highlighted the fair criticism by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the President of Turkey, addressed to European politicians for their disrespect of Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia. The mistakes of the European politicians did more harm to themselves than to anybody else.

«Ankara and Moscow have common position in assessing the current international situation. The erroneous decisions of the European Union are the key source of instability, and today European citizens are paying for the mistakes of their politicians – the inflation is growing, and the economy is deteriorating. From the very beginning Russia offered the negotiations to the West – both on the situation around Ukraine, and on the European security issues. We called for dialogue on various platforms including OSCE and NATO. However, eventually the West completely ignored practically all the concerns of Russia», Korotchenko said.

«In case the West ignores the concerns of Turkey about the terrorists’ organizations activities in Finland and Sweden (the fight of these organizations against Turkey), these two countries will never be members of NATO. The relations between Putin and Erdogan are undoubtedly based on defending their national interests. That is why, despite of the existing disputes on certain issues, today we are witnessing a very high level of mutual understanding between or two countries. Russian-Turkish relations are growing stronger. There are much more factors uniting Russia and Turkey than those, which separate them».

Korotchenko mentioned that Russia and Turkey needed to establish a geopolitical alliance: «I believe, time has come for breakthrough solutions in international security and for establishing a new world order. In the current environment, the establishment of Russian-Turkish geopolitical alliance is required. Combining our efforts, we can achieve much greater progress versus acting each by itself. Both Russia and Turkey will always be foes for Europe, but never friends. The existing system of international relations is collapsing. And within this new world order, Russia and Turkey are both ready to approach new breakthrough solutions including the geopolitical alliance, in which our countries will reinforce one another and successfully overcome the global military and political turbulence».
