Erevan welcomed expansion of EU forces in Armenia

14 November 2023

In a conversation with the correspondent of the Vestnik Kavkaza information and analytical agency the General Director of the Caspian Institute of Strategic Studies (Russia) underscored that the expansion of the mission of the European Union’s «observers» in Armenia will not bolster security in the region and, on the contrary, will create even bigger security threats.

«Expansion of the EU mission will have exclusively destructive, explosive impact on the security of the South Caucasus. As Russian officials stated, among others, the primary task of this mission is to create possibilities for large-scale intelligence activities, in particular, against Russia, Iran and a number of other states, as well as to provide conditions for Armenia to break away from the allied relations with Russia and to withdraw from the CSTO», he said.

«The fact that Erevan is actively pedaling this topic, meets the wishes of Brussels related to the expansion of the mission is yet another indicator that the government led by Nikol Pashinyan set a course towards changing the entire security structure in the South Caucasus region and not in the interests of regional states and their neighbors. We can say quite clearly that Armenia will seek its own way under the cover of western umbrellas», Igor Korotchenko pointed out.

As for the plans of Brussels itself concerning the European mission, these are already known. «The activities of this mission are aimed in the first place against Iran, as well as against Azerbaijan. We can see that to fulfil the corresponding tasks the mission opens its representation offices in a number of Armenian towns on Armenia’s borders. Actually, diplomatic resident agency stations are being set up to conduct subversive activities in the region by a number of western intelligence services», the political analyst concluded.
