International Conference «Eurasian Security: Reality and Prospects in the Transforming World»

Within its presidency in CSTO, the Republic of Belarus held a high-level international conference «Eurasian Security: Reality and Prospects in the Transforming World» on October 26-27. The participants represented the Heads of international organizations, government representatives, members of academic communities and think tanks from 30 countries.

On the second day of the conference, Igor Korotchenko, the General Director of the Caspian Institute for Strategic Studies, became the moderator of the special session «Strategic Stability and Nuclear Weapons: Threats and Opportunities for Eurasia in the new strategic environment». The session featured the following speakers:

  • Vladimir Orlov, the Director of Russian Center for Political Studies, the founder and the Director of the «Trialogue» discussion club, the Professor of Moscow State University of Foreign Affairs (MGIMO);
  • Askar Nursha, the Deputy Director of the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies with the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan;
  • Heinz Gartner, the Professor of the Political Studies Department of the University of Vienna;
  • Alexey Gromyko, the Director of the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS);
  • Ralf Bosshard, a military expert (Switzerland).

Summarizing the discussion results, Igor Korotchenko told the participants of the international conference «Eurasian Security: Reality and Prospects in the Transforming World» about the strategic nuclear forces drill headed by the RF President Vladimir Putin, the approaches of Moscow to the future of the START-3 Treaty and to proposals from Washington to resume the dialogue of strategic stability of nuclear weapons control, as well as evaluated the possibility of Russia starting a new wave of nuclear weapons testing on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago.
